Een schitterende plant / A splendid plant

A typical Triphylla-fuchsia, belonging to the Tropical Greenhouse at Beetsterzwaag, together with some other fuchsias of the Triphylla-type.
I found this plant was very hard to grow, I had one for a few years but it always stayed a pining bit of plant that only now and then showed one flower, not more. Perhaps this cutting wasn't very healthy already when I bought it, for its foliage was deformed, it was too narrow and irregular in shape. Normally the striking foliage of this plant, showing its
F. boliviana-descent, should be one of the charming things about it. When I tried to make a new cutting I got no result at all.
Years ago I had seen this plant in an 'open garden', which was a good one too, but not as big and beautiful as this one at Beetsterzwaag. From the same German hybridizer Bonstedt, living around the turn of the 19th/20th century, is the rather common triphylla 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt', while 'Mary' can be considered rare in cultivation, possibly because she is not so easy.

triphyllas with 'Mary' on the right, behind-left 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' and front-left possibly 'Thalia'.
