Stinkend nieskruid - Stinking Hellebore - Helleborus foetidus (Ranunculaceae)

This Hellebore with its many small flowers in complicated inflorescences is only grown in gardens in the Netherlands, but occurs in the wild in Western and Southern Europe in some woods on calcareous soil.

By the smell that came from the above flower I had picked for scanning, I expected it should be Helleborus foetidus, the Stinking Hellebore - a rather strong, somewhat irritating smell came from the cut stem and more or less from the flower itself. Looking it up in a few books and photos on the web gave me certainty about this.

The plant's colouring consists of several shades of green, only the rim around the calyx is purple. The elegant darkgreen foliage gives a surprising contrast with the lightgreen inflorescence.

Warning:
This plant, formerly used for medication to cattle, is rather poisonous!
