56. Klaproos - Field poppy
Papaver rhoeas (Papaveraceae)

De Klaproos is eigenlijk niets anders dan een kleine inheemse papaver. Men zag de plant vooral veel langs korenvelden, in gezelschap van o.a. korenbloem en bolderik, maar tegenwoordig wordt er zoveel aan 'onkruidbestrijding' gedaan, dat deze fraaie rode bloemen ook minder vaak hun kopjes opsteken dan vroeger.
Onkruid of niet, klaprozen zijn selectief in waar ze willen groeien. In mijn tuintje (zandgrond, niet erg vruchtbaar) bloeien overal waar ze de kans krijgen de oranje Spaanse papavertjes (Papaver atlanticum) die eigenlijk uit een Mediterraan klimaat stammen, maar 't is me niet gelukt om uit de peperbusjesvrucht van de inheemse klaproos ook een zichtbaar resultaat in mijn tuin te verkrijgen...
Het zal wel aan de grond liggen.

Field poppy is a small poppy or papaver that's completely indigenous and spontaneous in our climate. It prefers to grow in the borders of cornfields, just like cornflowers and cockleburs, but the phenomenon of weed control cuts down their numbers, so nowadays less of these pretty red flowerheads appear than in the past.
Weed or not, poppy is rather selective in where it wishes to grow. In my little garden with its rather infertile sandy soil you see lots of orange Spanish poppies (Papaver atlanticum), originating from a mediterranean climate, but I didn't succeed in sowing the pretty red ones in my garden with any visible result. It will be the soil, I suppose.
