Alt Mainau
   

Hierboven ziet men een paar van de oudste fuchsiastruiken van Europa, op het Zuid-Duitse bloemeneiland Mainau in het Bodenmeer, waar ik in mijn vacantie in juli 2002 speciaal naartoe ben gereisd, na deze informatie op de Gelderse Fuchsia Infosite te hebben gelezen. Uiteraard, dit was een hoogtepunt in het beleven van mijn hobby, vandaar dat ik me ermee op de foto heb laten zetten.

Above you see some of the oldest fuchsiashrubs in Europe, on the flower-island of Mainau in the South of Germany, to which I made a special "pilgrimage" during my holidays in July 2002, after having read this information at the Gelderse Fuchsia Infosite. Of course this was one of my hobby's highlights, that's why I had a photo taken with me standing beside this tree.

   

De bewering, dat 'Alt Mainau' dezelfde cultivar zou zijn als 'Chillerton Beauty', trek ik in twijfel. De reden is eenvoudig: het blad lijkt iets verschillend. 'Alt Mainau' heeft, zoals men zien kan op deze foto's, geen rode middennerf, terwijl dat bij 'Chillerton Beauty' (deze plant heb ik zelf) wel het geval is. In de losbladige cultivarlijst staat zelfs in de omschrijving dat het blad een rode steel heeft. Bovendien lijkt het blad van 'Chillerton Beauty' iets glanzender.

The statement, that 'Alt Mainau' would be the same cultivar as 'Chillerton Beauty', seems doubtful to me, for the simple reason the foliage looks a bit different. 'Alt Mainau' has, as you can see in these pictures, no red nervure in its leaves, while 'Chillerton Beauty' does (I have that plant myself). In the Dutch cultivarlist with extended descriptions it's even mentioned that its foliage has red petioles. Besides, the foliage of 'Chillerton Beauty' seems a bit more glossy.

Een struik, die ruim 130 jaar is - dat leek me heel indrukwekkend. Maar wat bleek het geval? Er waren wel een stuk of 12 van die stokoude struiken! Bijna anderhalve eeuw geleden wist men ook al, dat je planten kon stekken...

A shrub of more than 130 years old - impressive, it seemed to me. But what was the case? There were about 12 of these ancient shrubs! In the 19th century people also knew already about taking cuttings...

Hiernaast ziet men enige van de oude struiken bij elkaar, zoals ze in de plantsoenen gezet zijn, in combinatie met andere planten. In het verhaal van de Gelderse Fuchsia Infosite staat, dat de bordjes met "über 130 Jahre alt" er ook in 1988 al stonden (ze mochten in Mainau weleens "updaten"), dus het is waarschijnlijk dat de planten inmiddels rond de anderhalve eeuw oud zijn. On the left you see a few of these old shrubs together, as they were put in the flowerbeds, in combination with other plants. In the story of the Gelderse Fuchsia Infosite we are told the signs with "über 130 Jahre alt" already were there in 1988 (not updated later-on), so we may assume the shrubs will be about one and a half century old by now.

De tekst op het bordje hiernaast luidt ongeveer:
"Fuchsia's (Fuchsia-hybriden). Op het eiland Mainau heeft de fuchsia altijd al een belangrijke rol gespeeld. In ons fuchsia-assortiment van 200 kweekresultaten doet men steeds nieuwe ontdekkingen bij de elegante hangende bloemen. De reeds meer dan 130 jaar oude planten, die tot sterk verhoute opgaande struiken van 3.60 m zijn opgegroeid, behoren ongetwijfeld tot de aantrekkelijkste."
Rest mij nog te vertellen, dat de hoogte van de oude struiken volgens tuinlieden aldaar was gereduceerd omdat ze te groot werden om 's winters in de kas te bergen.

An approximate translation of the text on the sign on the right:
"Fuchsias (Fuchsia hybrids). On the island of Mainau the fuchsia has always played an important part. In our collection of about 200 fuchsia cultivation-results one makes more and more discoveries among the elegant hanging flowers. No doubt the more than 130-year-old plants, having grown into 3.60 m tall woody shrubs, are among the most charming ones."
I have to add to this, that the height of the old shrubs, according to gardeners at Mainau, had been reduced because the plants became too big to be put in the greenhouse during winter.
