Leonhart Fuchs (naar wie men de fuchsia genoemd heeft), arts en botanicus in de zestiende eeuw te Tübingen in Duitsland,
hier afgebeeld met de bloem die hij zelf nooit heeft mogen aanschouwen,
aangezien die pas eeuwen later door de Franse monnik Charles Plumier (1646-1704)
in Zuid-Amerika zou worden ontdekt. Deze plaat is een bewerking van een soberder tekening waar hij minder bont is gekleed en een totaal andere plant in de hand houdt. Interessant is wat de (oud-Nederlandse!) tekst boven zijn hoofd vermeldt: "Doct. Leonhaert Fuchs int XLVIII. jaer sijns levens." Dit betekent: in zijn 48ste levensjaar, dus modern gezegd, hij was daar zevenenveertig. Hij werd 65 jaar: geboren op 17 januari 1501 in Wemding (Kreis Donauwörth), overleden op 10 mei 1566 te Tübingen, waar hij professor was aan de universiteit. Hij schreef verscheidene "kruidboeken", vooral over de medicinale waarde van planten. |
Leonhart Fuchs (whose name was given to the genus Fuchsia), a 16th century doctor and botanist in Tübingen in Germany,
portrayed in this picture with the flower he never could have seen during his life as it was found only centuries later in South America by
the French monk Charles Plumier (1646-1704). This picture was made after an older drawing where he holds a totally different plant in his hand, and doesn't wear such colourful clothes as these. Interesting is what the (ancient Dutch!) text over his head says: "Doct. Leonhaert Fuchs int XLVIII. jaer sijns levens." - which means: in the 48th year of his life, so in modern language: at that time he was fourty-seven. He was born 17th January 1501 at Wemding (Kreis Donauwörth), and at the age of 65 he died on 10 May 1566 in Tübingen, where he was a professor at the university. He wrote various herbal books about plants and their medicinal worth. |
