Bij het bladeren in een oud schoolschrift uit 1966 met wat krantenberichtjes trof ik bovenstaand artikel aan. Als veertienjarige bekommerde ik me helaas nog niet om bronvermelding of datum, vandaar dat dit voor altijd een vraag zal blijven. Hoewel de pas opgerichte fuchsia-vereniging genoeg indruk op me maakte om dit artikeltje te bewaren, had ik destijds geen enkel idee om zelf lid te worden. De plant Fuchsia boeide me, maar een vereniging rond één soort plant leek me wat overdreven. Ik heb me toen dus (jammer eigenlijk) niet aangemeld bij secretaris Dirk van Delen, die kortgeleden (eind 2001) is overleden. Pas 30 jaar later, in 1996, werd ik lid van de Nederlandse Kring van Fuchsiavrienden. |
This article from an unknown newspaper in 1966 tells us about the Dutch Fuchsia Society's very beginning. It was founded in 1965,
and this article announces their very first fuchsia-show, held in the Botanical Garden at Leiden in 1966, August 27 and 28. "You can admire many new kinds of fuchsias there," it says, and further it reveals that already 350 (!) different fuchsias have been imported by the new Society, "..and for the time being there's no end to this, because in England and the US there are already 2- to 3-thousand varieties!" Although this article was interesting enough to be saved, as a 14-year-old I didn't yet fancy to become a member myself. When at last I joined the Dutch Fuchsia Society in 1996, 30 years had passed! |
