Flora te Ootmarsum (Overijssel), 2 t/m 10 augustus 2003
In 2003 waren er helemaal geen fuchsiashows in onze nabije omgeving, deze Flora (waarbij ook andere planten te zien waren, o.a. Brugmansia's, Begonia's en Pelargoniums) was nog het minst ver weg. Wij dachten zo'n 1½ uur autorijden, maar dat bleek 2½ uur te wezen, mede door wegwerkzaamheden die omleidingen tengevolge hadden. Het was bovendien de heetste dag van de allerheetste hittegolf die ik in mijn leven van ruim een halve eeuw heb mogen meemaken - bij een buitentemperatuur van ongeveer 37°C was de lange autorit -zonder airco- bepaald geen pretje. Onderweg bekroop me het gevoel dat we dit beter niet hadden kunnen ondernemen, dan maar eens een jaartje zonder fuchsiashow...
Toen we rond het middaguur in de laaiende hitte het terrein opliepen, zag ik het al - veel planten hingen slap, met bloemen en knoppen die gerimpeld waren als oude besjes.
Tegen zo'n hitte viel niet te sproeien, en voor de meeste fuchsia's zijn temperaturen boven de 30°C gewoon moordend. De Pelargoniums en Brugmansia's konden er wat beter tegen, die horen oorspronkelijk ook in een warmer klimaat thuis, maar voor potplanten is zo'n hitte nooit goed, de zon schijnt op de pot en de wortelkluit raakt oververhit.
Het was opvallend rustig op het terrein - geen bezoekers "in groten getale", nee, zelfs geen "gezellige drukte"... eerlijkgezegd, het was er een klein beetje uitgestorven.
In het restaurant op het terrein wilden we na zo'n lange reis wel graag een goede lunch, maar dat werd slechts een heel simpele van een paar broodjes en een kopje koffie, want we kregen te horen: "Gewoonlijk hebben we wel wat meer, maar met die drukte tijdens de Flora houden we het wat eenvoudig..."
Met een beetje heimwee dacht ik terug aan de fuchsiashow van onze regio Friesland, in 2001 te Rijs; daar was niet eens een officiële eetgelegenheid, maar men had wel gezorgd dat er tijdens de drukbezochte show meer dan genoeg was om "de inwendige mens" van dienst te zijn...
Ondanks de hitte heb ik echter wel wat foto's gemaakt van fuchsia's die er niet al te treurig uitzagen, doordat ze toevallig niet in de felle zon stonden, en tot die soorten behoorden die wat beter tegen warmte bestand zijn dan de gemiddelde fuchsia, zoals diverse triphylla's die ik thuis niet heb.

In 2003 there were no fuchsiashows at all in areas surrounding us, this Flora (where they also had other plants, like Brugmansias, Begonias and Pelargoniums) was nearest. We thought about a drive of 1½ hours, but that proved to be 2½ hours, due to diversion of the route because of roads in repair.
Moreover, it was the hottest day of the very hottest heatwave I've ever experienced in the more than half a century of my life. At an outside temperature of about 37°C (100°F) the long drive -without airconditioning- wasn't exactly a treat.
On our way I got the feeling we had better not have gone at all, we'd have survived a summer without a fuchsiashow...
When we arrived around mid-day in the scorching sunshine at the grounds of the show, I already saw it - many plants were limp, with flowers and buds wrinkled like old crones.
There was no adequate watering possible against such a heat, and most fuchsias can't bear temperatures above 30°C (86°F). Pelargoniums and Brugmansias were a bit better, those originate from warmer climates, but for potplants heat always is a problem when the sun shines on the pots, the roots get cooked inside.
It was very, very quiet at the Flora - no crowds of visitors, no, hardly any people around... really it was more like a desert.
In the restaurant belonging to the open-air museum we heard the best (or worst) joke of the day, when we expected to order a good lunch after our long journey - the waiter told us: "Usually we have more variety of choice, but in these busy days during the Flora we keep it a bit simple..."
More than a cup of coffee and a few rolls we couldn't get there. My thoughts went back to the fuchsiashow at Rijs in 2001, in Friesland, our own province; they didn't even have an official restaurant there, but during this well-visited show we could get everything we liked to eat and drink.
In spite of the heat I managed to take some photos of fuchsias that didn't look too dreary, because they happened to enjoy some shade, and belonged to those categories that can stand higher temperatures than the average fuchsia, like various triphyllas that I don't have at home.
