No. 13 - Maarts viooltje - Common blue violet
Viola odorata (Violaceae)

Het Maarts viooltje bloeit inderdaad zeer vroeg - doorgaans in maart, maar het wisselt al naar gelang het een zachte lente is of niet. Het groeit doorgaans in groepjes en heeft karakteristieke gesteelde ronde bladeren die in rozetjes uit de grond komen, en vrij onopvallende, meestal donkerpaarse bloempjes, die vooral bij zonneschijn vrij sterk en zoet geuren. Er bestaan ook andersgekleurde cultivars (doorgaans minder geurig), zoals de witte met paarse vlekjes op de foto hieronder. Omdat het zo'n laag en vrij onopvallend plantje is, wordt het Maarts viooltje gezien als een symbool van nederigheid, de aangehechte betekenis is dus wel duidelijk.

Common blue violet is a very early-flowering plant, as a rule in March indeed, but it varies with the circumstances in Spring - in a cold spring the flowers appear a bit later. The plants usually form groups and have characteristic stemmed round leaves, growing in rosettes coming out of the ground, and rather inconspicuous dark-purple flowers, spreading a sweet and rather strong scent when the sun shines. There are some differently-coloured cultivars too, often less fragrant, like the purple-speckled white ones in the picture below. Because the plants are so low and not very showy, Common blue violet is seen as a symbol of humbleness, and that's exactly the meaning of the Dutch word  'Nederigheid'.
