No. 43 - Cactus - Epiphyllum hybr. (Cactaceae)

Er zijn veel verschillende cactussen, maar die op de kaart is afgebeeld is een bladcactus, Epiphyllum hybride. Deze heeft prachtige grote bloemen, en niet al teveel stekels. Cactussen zijn afkomstig uit (Zuid-) Amerika, in tegenstelling tot wat veel mensen denken. In de Afrikaanse woestijnen zoals de Sahara komen van nature geen cactussen voor, wel vetplanten.

There are a lot of different cactuses, but the one on the card is an Epiphyllum. This one has splendid big flowers, and is not very spiny. Cactuses originate from (South) America, while many people think they come from the African deserts like the Sahara, where succulents do occur, but no cactuses, unless imported.
The meaning of the Dutch word 'Warmte' is 'Warmth'. No wonder, this is a plant from a real warm climate!
