No. 48 - Ridderspoor - Delphinium
Delphinium hybr. (Ranunculaceae)

Riddersporen zijn er in verschillende soorten, er zijn eenjarige (zoals waarschijnlijk die op de kaart) maar ook vaste planten, die in 't algemeen groter en voller zijn, zoals die op de foto's. Meestal zijn ze diepblauw, maar ook wel lichtblauw, roze, wit of blauw-met-wit. De plant is familie van de monnikskap en lijkt daar ook wel op, met lange trossen bloemen en ook qua bladvorm; beide zijn Ranonkelachtigen (Ranunculaceae), waartoe ook totaal anders uitziende planten zoals boterbloem behoren. Ridderspoor is zoals deze hele familie giftig.

There are different kinds of Delphinium, annuals (like probably the one on the card) but also perennial ones. The latter as a rule are taller and bigger, like these in the photos. Mostly deep-blue, but also light-blue, white, pink and blue-with-white ones are cultivated. The plant is a relative of Monkshood and looks a lot like it, with long racemes of flowers and handshaped leaves, both are (Ranunculaceae), belonging to the same family as e.g. buttercup, though looking quite different. Like all members of this family, Delphinium is poisonous.
The Dutch word "Lichtzinnigheid" means "Frivolity".
