No. 49 - Azalea - Azalea indicum (Ericaceae)

Azalea's kunnen zowel vrij kleine kamerplanten zijn, als grote struiken in tuinen en parken. De kamerplant Azalea indicum  heeft geen geur, maar de struik Azalea mollis, die in het voorjaar buiten bloeit en meters hoog en breed kan worden, geurt zoet en zwaar.
Azalea's worden in vele kleuren gekweekt, tegenwoordig ziet men ook veel tweekleurige, zoals de witte hieronder die rode randjes langs de bloemblaadjes heeft. Het is niet de gemakkelijkste potplant, hij heeft speciale zure grond nodig en moet één of twee keer per maand een "badje" hebben - een kwartier lang helemaal met de pot onderwater, zodat de grond totaal doordrenkt raakt, maar ook niet veel langer want dan verdrinken de wortels.

Azalea indicum is a potplant, mostly not very tall and without any perfume, but in gardens and parks you often find big bushes of Azalea mollis, which spread a heavy and sweet fragrance and can be several meters in height and width.
Pot Azaleas are cultivated in many colours, nowadays you often see two-coloured ones like in the picture below, which has white petals with a red rim.
Azalea indicum is not the easiest plant to grow, it requires special acid soil and should have a "bath" once or twice a week - for about a quarter of an hour the whole pot sunken in water to drench the soil, but not much longer because this can drown the roots.
The Dutch word "Matigheid" means "Moderation".
