WALZ Estafette

WALZ Estafette - Waldenmaier 1981 NL H D wit-top groen paarsrood/roze / T D white purple-bas. pink

Ouders / Parentage: 'WALZ Bruintje'  x  'WALZ Bruintje'

Het is nauwelijks voor te stellen, dat deze bloem met een groenwitte kelk en buis en een vreemd opgebouwde (half)dubbele kroon is ontstaan uit twee kruisingen waaraan slechts één cultivar ten grondslag ligt - nl. de oude vertrouwde enkelbloemige rood-met-paarse 'Achievement'. Immers, 'WALZ Bruintje' is op zijn beurt weer een kruising van 'Achievement' met 'Achievement'. Deze plant is een F2-hybride van 'Achievement', waarin een "verloren" eigenschap van deze plant ineens tevoorschijn komt, nl. de kroon die in etages is opgebouwd (staat in de losbladige cultivarlijst met uitgebreide beschrijvingen). Officiëel zou de kroon moeten bestaan uit een laag van 4 schelpvormige korte kroonblaadjes, en één van 4 "petalloïden", gesteelde kroonblaadjes, die onder de korte uitkomen. Men ziet echter op de foto's, zowel die uit Nederland (hierboven) als die uit Australië (hieronder), dat er meestal niet van elk 4 aanwezig zijn. Niet alleen de vorm en kleur van de bloem zijn totaal verschillend van zowel 'WALZ Bruintje' als 'Achievement', ook de manier van groeien; bovengenoemde zijn opgaande groeiers, terwijl 'WALZ Estafette' een echte hanger is. Men kan wel spreken van een estafette, mogelijk is deze naam daarom ook gegeven - het steeds doorgeven van iets, in dit geval de genen van de cultivar 'Achievement'.

It's hard to imagine, that this flower with its greenish-white tube & sepals, and a strangely built (half)double corolla, had its origin in two crossings from only one cultivar, the old single-flowered red-and-purple 'Achievement', as 'WALZ Bruintje' in its turn is a crossing from 'Achievement' x 'Achievement'. The plant is an F2-hybrid of 'Achievement', and regained a hidden quality of 'Achievement': the petals growing in "storeys" (according to the Dutch cultivar-list with extended descriptions). There should be 4 short shell-shaped petals, and 4 stalked ones - "petalloids" - as a layer under these. In reality, the flowers mostly miss some petals in both or either storeys, as you can see in the pictures from the Netherlands (above) and from Australia (below), these flowers are somewhat irregular in shape. Not only shape and colour of the flower is totally different from both that of 'WALZ Bruintje' and 'Achievement', also the style of growing, these two being upright shrubs while 'WALZ Estafette' is a real trailer. The word estafette means "relay-race", in this case the baton to be passed on being the genetic qualities of the cultivar 'Achievement'; perhaps that's why the result got this name.

N.B.: Er is een uitgebreide correspondentie over deze plant geweest, die begon met een vraag van Mevr. Lyn Robson, voorzitster van de Australian Fuchsia Society, welke van de twee nu eigenlijk de echte 'WALZ Estafette' was - de plant die zij in Australië kende (de juiste, hierboven te zien), of de plant, die op de volgende bladzijde te zien is - deze doet zowel bij ons in Nederland als in Wales (en mogelijk heel Groot-Brittannië) de ronde als 'WALZ Estafette'. Maar aan de andere kant van de wereld, en ook bij de bron (de Waldenmaier Fanclub) bleek de ware plant gelukkig nog bekend.

N.B.: There has been a large correspondence about this plant, starting with a question from Mrs. Lyn Robson, president of the Australian Fuchsia Society, which of two different plants was the real 'WALZ Estafette' - the one she knew in Australia (which happened to be the right one, shown above), or the plant you can see on the next page. That one seems to be known in both the Netherlands and Wales (possibly even in the whole UK) as 'WALZ Estafette'. But on the other side of this planet, and also at the source (the Waldenmaier Fanclub), fortunately they still knew the real plant.
