Voorjaarsvergadering 2002

Spring-meeting 2002

On March 16th, the Spring-meeting of our Branch of the Dutch Fuchsia Society was held in the community centre "De Buorskip" at Beetsterzwaag.

When I had entered the hall, one of the other members came to me and complimented me on my website - this is always nice to hear, of course. Taking off his coat, he showed me his T-shirt, with a picture from my website printed on it, far bigger than the original scan.
"The Boldoot-fuchsia," he said, "I thought it so pretty, that I went to a shop to have a print made on an A4. Then I saw they also printed T-shirts there. I immediately decided to have the picture printed on a shirt too."
I regretted not to have brought my camera.
We sat down at the same table and he told me, that he and his wife had built up a whole collection of "fuchsialore" during the last few years - so at their home the fuchsias are in flower all the year round, on their walls and in a special show-case in their hall.
They showed us a packet of photos with several collection-pieces. They don't live very far from us, so we agreed to meet them at their home before long, to have a look and take some photos for the website.
A few months ago I added a page with embroidered fuchsia-postcards that can be ordered by e-mail. These people had contacted this lady and so they could add some of these cards to their collection too.
Apparently there are quite a few people interested in objects related to fuchsias. In England they even have a magazine called "Fuchsialore", about this subject only.

Alas, the meeting was not about happy things only.
Two ladies, both very active for our branch of the Society, had died unexpectedly in February, three weeks after one another. The first being a committee-member, only 56 years old, and the second a member of the editorial staff, 63 years old. This really means a loss to our Society.

The day-out of the Friesian branch during summer will be to the "Floriade" (-an enormous flowershow, lasting the whole summer; it's an event that's been organized every 10 years from 1972 on-), during the period it also contains a fuchsia-show somewhere in July/August.
The majority of people interested agreed, it didn't take as long to make a decision as often was the case in former years.

Last year we held our fuchsia-show in Rijs, this year we won't have a show in Friesland, but in the neighbouring province Drenthe there will be one next summer in August. We could get a poster announcing it already.

At he end of the afternoon there was a slide-show about English gardens. I thought it quite interesting; I'd always had the idea that English gardens were very stiff with plants lined up severely, but this proved not to be the case. I saw a lot of picturesque old walls with climbers, e.g. clematis, finding their own elegant ways around them.

As usual, trays full of fuchsia-cuttings were for sale in the hall, from nursery "Het Purperklokje" at Boelenslaan (a village in Friesland). The growers, Freerk van der Veen and his wife Sjoukje, are members of our club too, and after Freerk even a fuchsia has been named already, as I happened to see in the Dutch Fuchsia Society's magazine "Fuchsiana".
To my regret the order I had placed by telephone, hadn't been completed really. Only three plants had been picked out for me, while last year I got 12 of the 15 plants I had asked for. In the trays I found three more, while the others (about 10) weren't there at all, e.g. the beautiful 'Mary Fairclo' I had seen at the show last year, and a few new ones that had been examined in 2001.

Yet I didn't go home with hardly any new plants. I took a.o. a few WALZ-musical instruments that I hadn't had before, there was enough choice. Though they're not really easy, I usually have pretty good results with those.

I didn't have to leave without any "novelties" either, for our president/hybridizer Jan de Boer gave me a small plant of 'Rijs 2001' (photo right), named after last year's fuchsiashow, and some cutting-material of 'Straat Agulhas', his other newly examined cultivar (three weeks and a half have past now, and I have potted up 3 little plants already).

Before going home everybody got a cutting for the yearly competition, this time of a plant that bore the name of "Georg Barlett". I looked it up the same day in the online cultivarlist of the Dutch Fuchsia Society, but it was not there.
Supposing the name hadn't been spelled correctly, I found two possible alternatives, sounding a bit similar: 'Geoff Barnet' (GB, 1987) and 'George Barr' (USA, 1930), but I was sure I'd read the name George Bartlett somewhere. After looking around on the Internet I found out at last that it should be 'President George Bartlett' (GB, 1997).
