Kerstroos - Christmas-rose (Helleborus niger - Ranunculaceae)

        Hoewel men deze vaste plant wel Kerstroos noemt, is hij pas tegen 't eind van de winter in bloei. Hij wordt heel veel op kerstkaarten afgebeeld - in combinatie met bijv. groene sparretakken, de rode Kerstster (Euphorbia pulcherrima), en donkergroene hulst met rode bessen.
Waarschuwing: De plant is behoorlijk giftig!

This typical Christmas-plant is a perennial which flowers at about the same time as snowdrops, actually not before the end of the winter. Nevertheless, it's a favourite theme for christmascards, mostly in combination with other christmas plants like holly, mistletoe and Euphorbia pulcherrima.
Warning: This plant is rather poisonous!
