De stekken van Straat Cook, Straat Florida,
Straat Fiji, Straat Malakka,
Straat Holland en
Fuchsia colensoi zijn in de loop van de afgelopen zomer
allemaal uitgegroeid tot "volwassen" planten. Ook hebben ze op de botanische variëteit F. colensoi na alle gebloeid, maar
niet allemaal even geweldig.
De bronsbladige Straat Malakka kreeg maar enkele bloempjes in augustus, die ook
nog helemaal niet opvielen omdat ze vrijwel dezelfde kleur hadden als het blad, en Straat Fiji bloeide pas in
september. Van alle zes of meer stekken was er maar één die tenslotte bloeide, en dat waren ook maar een stuk of
acht bloempjes in totaal...
De kweker van deze cultivars,
Jan de Boer (zie foto) had me al wel gewaarschuwd dat
het enthousiasme van bezoekers van zijn tuin niet al te groot was geweest voor Straat Fiji, vanwege de kleine
onopvallende bloempjes, maar ik stel me voor dat een plant vól met zulke bloempjes heel aardig zou zijn geweest.
Betere bloeiresultaten waren er bij Straat Florida, Straat Holland en Straat Cook, hoewel het vrij laat in 't seizoen
was toen de laatste twee begonnen te bloeien - ook pas eind augustus. Het wat onregelmatige, vrij kleine en wat bruinachtig
getinte blad van deze drie cultivars lijkt zoveel op elkaar, dat ze pas te onderscheiden zijn als ze bloeien.
Deze tamelijk winterharde planten verliezen evenals de kleinbladige botanische fuchsia F. procumbens in de herfst al
hun blad, zodat er kale takken overblijven - met hier en daar nog een bloempje aan de top, want het blad valt eerder af.
Over de behandeling in de winter zei de heer J. de Boer o.m. het volgende in het mei-nummer van regio-Friesland-blad "De Beltsjeblom", dat
vier keer in het jaar verschijnt:
"Winterhard zijn 'Straat Magelhaen', 'Marjan de Boer', 'Straat Napier' en 'Straat Fiji'.Hierbij worden dus ook een paar andere cultivars van zijn hand genoemd. Op Straat Napier en
Zeer gemakkelijk over te houden zijn: 'Straat Cook', 'Straat Holland', 'Straat Florida', 'Straat Nassau', 'Caitlin Isabelle', 'Cornelis Jan Wijnberg' en 'Vechtweelde'.
Deze kunnen ook ingekuild worden."
Caitlin Isabelle zal ik later nog terugkomen, want hiervan heb ik inmiddels ook stekken gekregen.

During summer the cuttings of Straat Cook, Straat Florida, Straat Fiji, Straat Malakka, Straat Holland and Fuchsia colensoi have grown up to real plants. All except the species F. colensoi have had flowers, but they were not always spectacular.
Bronzy Straat Malakka only got a few tiny flowers in August, which weren't very striking because they had almost the same colouring as the foliage, and Straat Fiji didn't flower before September. Of all six or more cuttings there was only one that got a few - about eight - small flowers.
The grower of these cultivars, Mr. Jan de Boer (photo) had already warned me that the enthousiasm of visitors in his garden hadn't been to great about Straat Fiji, because of its tiny insignificant flowers, but I imagine a plant full of these flowers could be very decorative.
Better flowering results were obtained with Straat Florida, Straat Holland and Straat Cook, although it also was rather late in the season when the last two started flowering - not before the end of August. The somewhat irregularly shaped, rather small foliage of brownish hue of these three cultivars is so much alike, that they can't be distinguished until the flowers appear. In autumn these about winterhardy plants lose all their leaves, just like the small-leaved species F. procumbens, so that only bare branches remain - with some occasional flowers at the ends, because the leaves drop first.
In the quarterly magazine "De Beltsjeblom" (=The Fuchsia) of the Friesian Branch of the Dutch Fuchsia Society, Mr. J. de Boer says a.o. the following about their treatment in winter:
"Winterhardy are 'Straat Magelhaen', 'Marjan de Boer', 'Straat Napier' and 'Straat Fiji'.As you may have noticed, some more hybrids of his are mentioned here; after some time I'll tell about Straat Napier and Caitlin Isabelle too, I got some cuttings of these also during summer.
Very easy to keep during winter are: 'Straat Cook', 'Straat Holland', 'Straat Florida', 'Straat Nassau', 'Caitlin Isabelle', 'Cornelis Jan Wijnberg' and 'Vechtweelde'.
These also can be kept under peatlitter."
