Verscheidene fuchsia-veredelaars hebben een vast voorvoegsel bij de namen die ze hun "creaties" geven. Verschillende aanwinsten van de heer J. de Boer uit Blesdijke (vroeger kapitein op de koopvaardij) beginnen met "Straat" - ze zijn alle naar een schip genoemd dat de naam van een zeestraat droeg. Vier van de stekken hieronder zijn heel nieuwe cultivars, nl. Straat Cook, Straat Fiji, Straat Florida en Straat Holland zijn allemaal in 1999 gekeurd. Straat Malakka is van 1995, en Fuchsia colensoi is een botanische fuchsia, die voor sommige van deze cultivars als kruisingsouder is gebruikt.


Deze kleine stekken zijn op F. colensoi na allemaal van kruisingen die Jan de Boer, voorzitter van de regio Friesland van de Nederlandse Kring van Fuchsiavrienden, zelf heeft ontwikkeld. Hij bracht ze, op mijn verzoek, voor me mee op de voorjaarsvergadering van 18 maart 2000.
Deze cultivars wijken uiterlijk nogal af van het klassieke "fuchsia-beeld".
Dit komt door hun Nieuw-Zeelandse afkomst: de meeste stammen af van Fuchsia procumbens.
Ook Fuchsia colensoi komt uit Nieuw Zeeland.

De eerste stekken waren na drie weken voldoende beworteld om in een mengsel van gewone potgrond vermengd met een beetje zand te worden geplant.
De rest volgde na bijna nog een week, op 13 april heb ik ze geplant.
Het ligt in mijn bedoeling om er het komende seizoen volwassen planten van te kweken met bloemen, die ik dan ook weer in deze site hoop te laten zien.
Vorige herfst had ik al eens een stekje van Straat Cook, maar daar kwam toen niets van terecht...

Several fuchsia hybridizers have a prefix to all the names they give to their "creations".
Many of the products of Mr. J. de Boer from Blesdijke (formerly a sea-captain) begin with "Straat" - all of them called after ships having sea-straits' names. Four of the cuttings below are brand-new hybrids: Straat Cook, Straat Fiji, Straat Florida and Straat Holland all passed the examination in 1999. Straat Malakka is from 1995, and Fuchsia colensoi is a species which was used to make some of these crossings.
All these small cuttings except F. colensoi are hybrids developed by Jan de Boer, president of the Friesian branch of the Dutch Fuchsia Society.
He gave them to me at the spring meeting on the 18th of March 2000, at my request.
They don't look much like the "classical fuchsia" - because of their New Zealand origin.
Most of these hybrids are offspring from Fuchsia procumbens.
Fuchsia colensoi also comes from New Zealand.

After 3 weeks the first cuttings had enough roots to be planted in a mixture of ordinary potting soil with a little sand.
The rest followed after nearly another week, on April 13 I planted them too.
I'll try to keep them growing, and get some nice plants out of them with flowers, which I hope to show in this site during the coming season.
Last autumn I already got a cutting of Straat Cook, but that wasn't a great success...
