Japanse kwee (Chaenomeles japonica) in de sneeuw

Het is nog steeds behoorlijk koud, hoewel het niet aanhoudend vriest duikt de temperatuur toch dikwijls onder nul, vooral 's nachts. Begin februari viel er ook weer sneeuw, die enige dagen is blijven liggen. Voor het eind van deze week wordt ook weer matige vorst verwacht - van mij mocht 't weleens afgelopen wezen!
Toch heb ik gistermiddag eindelijk weer wat in de tuin kunnen doen, de zon scheen en ontdooide de grond die 's morgens nog hard bevroren was geweest.
Eindelijk bollen geplant, paarse sieruien (Allium aflatunense) en rode botanische tulpjes. Officieel moeten die in 't najaar al de grond in, maar met al dat vocht van tegenwoordig is er veel kans dat ze verschimmelen, zoals ik met name met de Allium weleens heb meegemaakt. Sinds jaren zet ik pas eind januari, begin februari de bollen in de grond, en dat gaat prima. Voor die tijd groeien ze toch nog niet.

Verder is er een verslag over de nieuwjaarsreceptie van 2003, gehouden op 4 januari, waarbij een nieuw ontwerp voor het omslag van de "Beltsjeblom", het regioblad voor Friesland (NKvF regio 1) werd gekozen - ook te vinden bij FUCHSIAVARIA.
Hierbij is ook een bladzijde toegevoegd aan FUCHSIALORE, van de op deze vergadering te koop aangeboden fuchsiastof om bijv. kleding of een gordijn van te maken.
Bij HERBARIUM deze keer nog geen nieuwe planten, maar wel een rectificatie :
Op de bladzijde "Grote blauwe sierwinde" (Ipomoea tricolor) bleek het niet allemaal over dezelfde plant te gaan.
Van een winde-kenner kreeg ik een e-mail, dat er behalve van Ipomoea tricolor ook plaatjes bij waren van Ipomoea indica (syn. I. acuminata, I. learii), zodat ik de bladzijde gesplitst heb - met als resultaat nog een winde-soort erbij, nl. Ipomoea indica. Hoe meer planten, hoe meer vreugde...
Op de HOMEPAGE heb ik een knop toegevoegd die rechtstreeks leidt naar het fotoalbum uit 1945 van mijn moeders verblijf op de boerderij van haar nicht in Schagen, waar ze de hongerwinter overleefde.

It is still quite cold - though it doesn't freeze all the time temperatures often fall below zero, especially at night. In the beginning of February some snow came down again, remaining for a few days.
The weatherforecast for the end of this week even predicts moderate frost - I'd like to see the end of it by now!
Yet I could do something in the garden at last yesterday, there was sunshine all day which by noon had totally thawed the ground that still had been hard-frozen in the early morning.
I seized the opportunity to plant flowerbulbs, light-purple ornamental onions (Allium aflatunense) and red botanical tulips. Officially they should be put in the ground in autumn, but with all the moisture of these days there's a lot of chance they develop rot, as I experienced with these Allium before.
The last few years I never planted them before the end of January, always with good results. They won't grow earlier anyway.

Further I made a report about the New Year Reception of 2003, held
January 4th, where a new design was chosen for the cover of the "Beltsjeblom" (= "Fuchsia"), the Dutch Fuchsia Society's Friesian Branch's magazine - also to be found at FUCHSIAVARIA.
With this also a page was added to FUCHSIALORE, about the fuchsia-textile that was offered for sale at the meeting, e.g. to make a dress or a curtain.
At HERBARIUM this time no new plants yet, but there is a rectification :
On the page with Ipomoea tricolor there proved to be photo-material of 2 different plants.
A bindweed-expert sent me an e-mail saying these weren't only pictures of Ipomoea tricolor, but also of Ipomoea indica (syn. I. acuminata, I. learii), so that I split them up in two pages, resulting in one more morningglory - Blue dawn flower (Ipomoea indica). The more, the merrier...
On the HOMEPAGE I added a button leading directly to the photo-album from 1945 of my mother's stay at her cousin's farm at Schagen, where she survived the "hunger winter".
