Sieruien (Allium aflatunense) - al jaren in mei de blikvanger in mijn tuin

22 mei:
Eigenlijk had ik vandaag in de tuin moeten werken - alle fuchsia's moeten nog uitgeplant worden - maar de slogan van mei 2003 is: binnenzitten !
Blijkbaar hebben we, doordat in de eerste lentemaanden het weer zo droog en helder was, onze portie zon voor dit voorjaar alweer "opgesnoept" - het is eindeloos grijs, kil en regenachtig buiten.
Het begon al op 30 april, toen het traditionele "Oranjezonnetje" weigerde te schijnen (misschien vanwege de familieruzie in ons koningshuis?), en bij ons in Friesland de feestvierende menigte te Leeuwarden 's middags werd weggespoeld door een ware wolkbreuk!
In ons dorp, waar geen mensenmassa's langs de kraampjes van een vrijmarkt slenterden, was het ook goed raak: onze straat (zo'n "hofje" met aan vier kanten enige huizen en in 't midden een plantsoen met kinderspeelplaats) liep geheel onder water, met 't plantsoen als een eiland in 't midden, terwijl thuis het riool omhoogborrelde in gootsteen en toilet.
Sindsdien is het weer eigenlijk steeds wat van de kook geweest, de oude dichtregels uit
"Het haantje van de toren" van de 19de-eeuwse dichter P.A. de Genestet  zijn dit jaar weer heel actueel:

Doch onze noordse Mei, helaas, is arm aan zonneschijn,
Hij kan zo koud, zo droef, zo guur, hij kan November zijn...

Met mijn fuchsia's gaat 't voorlopig niet goed. Ze staan inmiddels wel allemaal buiten, maar sommige met gaten in de bladeren door hagel, en groei en bloei stagneren door de lage temperaturen, het is overdags de laatste week niet warmer dan een graad of 13 gemiddeld overdags.
Er is momenteel maar één fuchsia ('Checkerboard') die een beetje bloeit (uit knoppen nog afkomstig van toen hij binnen stond tot eind april).
Gelukkig zijn er ook nog planten die het nu ondanks het slechte weer goed doen, zodat we toch iets moois in de tuin hebben.
Het grootste succes zijn op dit ogenblik de sieruien, Allium aflatunense (zie foto hierboven), waarvan ik dan ook twee bladzijden vol foto's en tekst aan "Herbarium" heb toegevoegd deze keer.

Sinds 25 mei is het mooi weer - zouden we toch nog zomer krijgen...?

Ornamental onions (Allium aflatunense) - for years the eye-catcher in my garden in May

Actually I should be doing a lot of work in the garden to-day - all my fuchsias still have to be planted out - but the slogan of May 2003 is: stay inside !
As a matter of fact we already "ate away" our ration of sunshine for this spring during the earlier months when it was clear and very dry - and so the last 3 weeks it's been endlessly grey, chilly and rainy outside.
It started already on the 30th of April, our Queen's birthday, when the traditional "Orange sun" refused to shine (maybe because of the silly quarrel in our royal family?), and with us in Friesland the merry crowd at Leeuwarden was washed away by a cloud-burst in the afternoon!
In our village, where no masses of people sauntered along the stands of a free-market, the weather also gave a show: our street (a "square" with a couple of houses on four sides and a children's playground with some shrubs around it in the middle) was totally flooded, the playground being an island surrounded by water, while inside the houses the sewage began to bubble, by the rising water in sink and toilet.
After that the weather has been bad most of the time, bringing to my mind some lines from an old poem of  P.A. de Genestet, a 19th century Dutch poet, translated "The cockerel of the church-tower":

"But poor in sunshine is our northern May,
It's more like bleak November in a way... "

My fuchsias aren't doing well for the time being. I took them all outside, but some have holes in their leaves by the big hailstones we got, while growth and budding are retarded by the low temperatures; last week it's been around 13°C (55°F) by day.
At the moment I've only one fuchsia in flower ('Checkerboard'), from buds it made during April, then still being inside because of the nightfrost.
Fortunately there still are some plants giving a good show in the garden, in spite of the weather-conditions.
The greatest success are at present the ornamental onions, Allium aflatunense (see picture above), about which I added two pages full of photos & text to "Herbarium" this time.

Since 25 May the weather's been fine - will we get a bit of a summer yet...?
