Kruidachtig, soms verhoutend in de oudere delen. Tweeslachtige bloemen, meestal met veel kroonbladen, soms regelmatig, maar vaak 2-zijdig symmetrisch. Vele meeldraden, maar slechts 1 stamper. Vruchtbeginsel onderstandig, vlezig en niet in hokjes verdeeld. De planten zijn op 1 geslacht na (Rhipsalis) uitsluitend afkomstig uit Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. (Beschrijving grotendeels naar eigen waarneming. Een duidelijke omschrijving heb ik nl. nergens kunnen vinden). Fleshy plants without leaves, but with areoles (bunches of spikes), in which you also find the growing points. Herbaceous plants, sometimes becoming woody in the older parts. Androgynous flowers, mostly with a lot of petals, sometimes actinomorphic but often symmetrical. Many stamens, but only 1 pistil. Inferior ovary, fleshy and not divided into locules. The plants originate, apart from 1 genus (Rhipsalis) exclusively from America. (Description largely made from my own observation.
